"Operation: Support-A-Hero"

Posted by: adjutant on 02/23/2007 04:24 PM (Read: 713)
Operation: Support-A-Hero" Was begun by Ron Dillon a Past Commandant of our detachment and is currently operated by by Ken Borders and his wife, with the support and endorsement of all the Marines of the Joseph Schmittou Detachment. It is our detachments way of supporting our troops who are engaged in combat operations in OIF and OEF. We send "Care Packages" to them as often as we can. To date we have sent in excess of 461 Packages.

As one Marine said while home on R&R, "it is nice seeing all the We support our Troops stickers and ribbons on the cars and trucks, but the real supporters are the ones who send packages and letters."

Is Leadership Destined For Extinction?

Posted by: adjutant on 02/23/2007 07:09 PM (Read: 652)
Leadership is the greatest gift you can pass along to another generation. So why then is it so rare to find quality leaders in our current self-centered society? Some of us who have accepted, or in some cases had thrust upon us, the mantle of leadership are not living up to our responsibilities

I have been around either the military or law enforcement my whole life. I was born into a Marine Corps family and raised in JROTC and Scouting, until I was old enough to enlist in the Marines myself in 1963 at 17 years of age. Even my entry into God's all volunteer army (the church) was via a para-military youth group called Christian Service Brigade.

Throughout my six plus decades, I have observed and worked for and with many great military and law enforcement leaders. I have also had the opportunity to suffer under the tutelage of many self-proclaimed leaders who displayed a total lack of character and whose "moral compass" had obviously never been boxed. The leaders I found most effective were the ones who wore the cloak of leadership humbly and often somewhat warily, if not even reluctantly.

Leadership is Fragile

Posted by: adjutant on 05/17/2006 11:35 PM (Read: 579)
Leadership is not easy, if it was then everyone would be a leader. But, unless you are a hermit you already know that. All you have to do is look around and observe the lack of "Honor, Courage and Commitment" that is exhibited in the lives of many So-called leaders in our society today. Take a quick look at page two to get one perspective of the importance of good leadership.

"10 Second" Leadership Lessons I Learned in the Marines

Posted by: adjutant on 05/17/2006 11:08 PM (Read: 597)
Feel free to adopt and/or adapt any of these leadership lessons and pass them along by applying them in your own lives. They don't take very long to read, but internalizing them may require some sacrifice. But, as my DI use to remind me, "No sacrifice is too great for your Marines."
